The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS, www.nexteinstein.org) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate training, research and outreach in mathematical sciences. Its mission is to enable Africa's brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa's future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. The first AIMS centre opened in Cape Town, South Africa in 2003; since 2011, AIMS has opened additional centres in Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania. AIMS is preparing to open its 6th Centre in Kigali, Rwanda. The goal of the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) is to build a pan-African network of 15 centres of excellence across the continent by 2023.

Each AIMS centre provides an intensive and broad education to over 50 African students each year and prepares them for leadership careers in academia, governance and industry. The AIMS educational program relies on top international lecturers who teach in a 24-hour learning environment.

Finance Officer, Skills for Employability (SFE) Program

Reporting to the Program Director, SFE and with a technical reporting line to the Finance and HR Manager, this role is responsible for maintaining effective and efficient accounting and financial records for the SFE program, preparing financial reports and drafting the annual budget in conjunction with the Program Director, SFE.

The AIMS SFE program’s overall goal is to provide 1,000 young Africans studying STEM courses in La Francophonie with skills that are relevant for employment. This will be done through the AIMS Cooperative (Co-op) Education Master’s degree, short courses with the use of both a digital online learning portal and face to face interaction.

This is a full-time, two-year renewable contract opportunity based at the AIMS Senegal Centre of Excellence in Mbour, Senegal.

Do you have what we need?

  • Master’s degree in relevant area and/or equivalent work experience (an undergraduate degree in combination with qualifying experience accepted in lieu of an advanced degree);

  • Fully bilingual in French and English (speak, read, write);

  • Four (4) years’ experience in a similar role, working in accounting, grants and developing budgets;

  • Excellent MS Office proficiency, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

  • Familiarity with accounting software; knowledge of ACCPAC is an asset;

  • Superior bookkeeping skills;

  • Attention to detail and ability to plan and implement work plan with minimum supervision;

  • Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines and pressure;

  • Strong analytical abilities and ability to prepare concise and informative financial reports; and

  • Ability to work as part of a team with culturally diverse professional staff.
