Finance and Administration intern – Dakar, Senegal
A great opportunity to gain hands-on experience on the financial aspects of Danish Red Cross’ humanitarian work in Africa. The Danish Red cross Sub-regional office for Africa in Dakar is looking for a motivated Finance and Administration intern to be part of our Finance team.
The intern will support the Administration Officer in the administrative and financial day-to-day management of the office. The candidate in this role will also participate in the administrator financial needs analysis and propose collective rules. In close collaboration with the regional team, the Finance and administration intern will support the sub-regional office in all matters related to the sub-regional office and programs’ finance management.
Your tasks
The intern will be an integrated part of the regional sub-office in Dakar. Tasks will include:
- Support to operationalise the standard operating procedures
- Support to consolidate the finance and administrative organisation and the operating framework in the Dakar office
- Provide support to the sub-regional office in aspects related to the program finance management
- Assist in drafting reports (phase-out projects, terms of reference, etc.)
- Assist in writing detailed budgets and budget notes for new projects / project proposals
- Provide support in the quality assurance of programme-related documents in English
- Support in the filing and organization of documents on Teams/OneDrive
- Support in setting up a physical filing system for key documents and staff related documents
- Support in improving the inventory lists (Regional office)
- Support the Deputy head of region on other administrative tasks as necessary
- Assist French speaking staff in understanding DRC SOPs (finance and procurement)
- Provide, if necessary, written translation support (French to English and vice versa)
- Assist with reporting and collecting of case stories
You will learn about the financial support the Dakar office brings to Danish Red Cross offices in Africa and the way we work with the Red Cross National Societies. You will be supervised and supported by the Administration Officer.
Requirements
- Relevant academic background: Business College – SPRØK or similar
- Excellent command of English and good (average) French
- Time-management and organizational skills
We expect
We expect that you work independently, are action driven and provide an effective service delivery. You are well structured and resourceful, interested in humanitarian work and want to be part of the Red Cross. We also expect you to have an interest in working closely with local actors, and that you have the skills to engage in different project activities. We imagine that you through your study have knowledge of international humanitarian work and/or insight into partnership projects.
Furthermore, we expect that you have excellent report writing and communication skills to be disseminated in a professional, but not academic language, and experience in administration and financial management. It is an advantage if you have previous experience working with volunteers as well as experience from or knowledge of the Red Cross Movement.
As a person, you are result oriented with a cultural sensitivity. You have an ability to both listen and facilitate dialogues with a flexible approach, adapting your way of working depending on the culture and capacities.
Fluency in Danish is a must. English and France skills required as described in the elaboration of each internship.
It is required to have an internship agreement with the university in place prior to the start of the internship, thus, enrollment in a relevant master programme e.g. Business, Language & Culture, migration studies, social science, political science, African studies, development studies or similar, is a requirement of this position.

At the same time, an internship with the Danish Red Cross in the Africa region will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned during your academic programme in a challenging, yet inspiring setting.
How to apply:
The internships begin in February 2020 and end in July 2020 and runs for 5-6 months in Senegal. The weekly working hours are 37.
The internship is unpaid, however accommodation, vaccinations and insurance are covered by the Danish Red Cross. Before arriving at the internship, a thorough training by the Danish Red Cross will be undertaken in Denmark and online.
